Deciding on a wedding photographer can be a very daunting task, first you have to decide how much you can afford to spend, what style of photography you like and what you would like in your package.
You might want to choose someone who is close to where you live or you might decide on a photographer whose work you love regardless of where they are.
There are several very important questions you must ask the photographer when you meet them. Some examples are: how long have they been a wedding photographer for? How long have they been is business? What qualifications do they have? When you look at their display albums ask who took these photos? A lot of wedding photography studios have several photographers working for them, so the photos you see in a display album may not have been taken by the person who ends up taking your wedding photos on the day. Make sure you see the work of the photographer who you have booked for your wedding day. Ask if they can show you some testimonials from previous clients. Most photographers will only be too happy to show these to you.
Another important question is to find out what is included in the package you decide on. Some packages include only taking the photos and receiving just small proofs or a proof album. If you decide you want to get some photographs enlarged, you will have to purchase these separately and this could end up being a very expensive way to get all those wedding photographs you just can’t live without.
Therefore find out the price of everything you might want in your wedding package or other products you might want to purchase separately, so you know how much it will cost and you can budget for it, rather than getting a nasty surprise later when you find out that a particular album or enlargement is going to cost a lot more than you expected. If you can get all the prices in writing.
Another important thing you must do is sign a contract. These usually contain certain things such as the price of the package you have chosen and what is included in that package. It should also include what will occur if (and I hope this never happens to you) that the photos do not turn out, or the photographer is unable to photograph your wedding. Will you get a full/partial refund or will they retake the photos on another day?
Finally, you must be able to feel comfortable and at ease with the person who is going to take your photographs, some photographers offer a free engagement or pre-wedding photography session once you book your wedding with them. This not only helps the photographer to see how comfortable you both are in front of the camera, but also it helps the couple feel more relaxed and get to know the person who will be capturing your most special memories on your wedding day.
