Couples flock to marry on 09/09/09

Tens of thousands of Chinese were rushing to get married today, hoping that the 09/09/09 date would bring longevity to their Weddings and lives.
Besides meaning "nine, nine", "jiu, jiu" in Chinese also means "for a long time," thus making Wednesday an auspicious day to get married.
The fact that another nine is added for 2009 has only made the day luckier in the world’s most populous nation, state press reported.

Long-term Australian couples favouring divorce

MORE long-term marriages are ending in divorce as unhappy couples become increasingly prepared to call it quits after the children leave the family home.
But overall, divorce rates are falling, and the number of marriages registered last year was at a 20-year high, The Australian reports.
Bureau of Statistics figures released yesterday reveal the number of marriages jumped 2.1 per cent from 2007 to last year,
while the number of divorces fell 1.6 per cent over the same time.
